The High School Art Contest originated in 2011, each spring Avondale Municipal Art Committee holds the Achieving Artists High School Art Contest to provide an opportunity for the committee to encourage & recognize the artistic talents of Avondale’s graduating high school seniors.

Achieving Artists High School Art Contest is open to all graduating seniors from Avondale High Schools. The exhibit in Avondale will showcase various mediums in the categories of two and three-dimensional art and photography.  The awards will be applied towards the college of the recipients’ choice, in the event, no school is chosen the award will be forfeited or awarded runner-up. The contest is sponsored by the Avondale Municipal Art Committee and partnerships with other art and educational organizations.

  1. Open to all graduating Seniors from High Schools in Avondale. Entries accepted on a first come, first serve basis. (One person per entry) 
 
  1. Each Student must submit a completed entry form and entry information must be clearly labeled/attached to the back of artwork.  *optional* Instagram display entry can be viewed it from artist’s profile account with hashtag # #AchievingArtists on Instagram account.
 
  1. Art projects must reflect a positive message. No nudity, No profanity, No violent images, No gang related images etc.
 
  1. Entries must be submitted to www.AvondaleAZ.gov/ArtContest. .  *optional* Instagram display entry can be viewed it from artist’s profile account with hashtag # #AchievingArtists on Instagram account Artwork will be displayed the website for public review at www.AvondaleAZ.gov/AchievingArtists.
 
  1. “Achieving Artists” High School Art Contest awards will be determined by judges selected by the Art Committee.
 
  1. Projects not picked up during the designated release day will become property of the City of Avondale. Submissions with hashtag are subject to Instagram terms and conditions.
 
  1. Award checks will be mailed to the college that students choose to attend. If winning students do not attend a college they will not receive a funding from Avondale Municipal Art Committee. Winning students must provide proof of college enrollment in order to receive a funding from Avondale Municipal Art Committee.
 
  1. Exhibitor hereby authorizes the City of Avondale and Municipal Art Committee to use exhibitor’s image and the image of his/her items entered in the City of Avondale art contest and on Avondale’s website for purposes of promoting and educating the public regarding the wide array and talent exhibited within the City of Avondale. Exhibitor is responsible for all copyrights and trademarks pertaining to the entries and agrees to any reproductions used to educate and promote.
 
  1. Artwork must be display ready; physical display must be hang ready for judging; digital display must be a resolution image between (1500 to 4200 pixels) in digital image formats.
 
  1. Additional questions should be directed to the staff person of the Municipal Art Committee.

1.             Poorly presented. Incomplete or poorly written submission materials.
2.             Ineffective presentation. Futile or indisposed written submission materials.
3.             Effort out of place with the context of work. Finishing touches still required.
4.             Good effort and exhibition. Finished look and visual appeal.
5.             Great overall impression/impact effort and exhibition.  Presentation enhances to the overall display and is exceptional.
Technique
 
1.             Evidence of poor craftsmanship. Poor application and use of materials, lighting, posing, capture
2.             The finished product that lacks finishing touches.  Appears to need improvement.  Below average craftsmanship, technical skill, color balance, lighting, subject interest, story.
3.             Average craftsmanship, technical skill, color balance, lighting, subject interest, story.
4.             The artwork is adequate but would be improved with more care.
5.             The artwork is finished with a high level of skill.  Lacks a few finishing details. Above-average craftsmanship technical skill, color balance, lighting, and composition.
6.             The artwork is outstanding and finished with great attention to care and detail with technical excellence.
Concept
 
1.             Artwork lacks creativity and original thought subject interest. Theme and/or story is weak, trite, stereotypical, or copied.
2.             Artwork lacks creativity, composition, and original thought subject interest and/or story. The theme is not fully developed.
3.             The artwork shows evidence that an idea was tried but lacks originality subject interest and/or story.  Average degree of originality; theme is present with little elaboration.
4.             Above average, degree of originality throughout. The theme is present with some elaboration.
5.             The superior degree of originality exhibited throughout. Very unique solution; the theme has been explored and elaborated on to a high degree with artistic merit. Content is exceptional the overall delivery.

•              Does the work stand on its own as a complete and outstanding creative image?
•              The composition and design of the work is also a judging criteria.
•              Note: The quality of the images submitted will also play a role in the judging process. It is best if the images submitted are no smaller than 600px.
